The last decade has seen the rise of digital platforms, catalyzing value-creating interactions between various groups of participants, either in two-sided markets where two distinct types of participants interact (e.g., ride-hailing apps and food delivery apps) or multi-sided markets such as Google, a search engine which connects users, content providers, and advertisers. Digital technologies such as the internet have created powerful technologically enabled networks or marketplaces that significantly lowered the cost of acquiring and using information, thus, lowering transaction costs and production costs.

The digital platforms either provide pure digital products/ services (e.g. Ghana) or enable provisioning of physical products/ services enabled by digital interfaces (e.g. Swiggy). They also can be of various types: B2C (e.g. IndiaMart), B2B (e.g. InMobi), C2C (e.g. OLX) and can provide variety of services ranging from pure Director Services (e.g. JustDial) to aggregators (e.g. Flipkart, Ola, MakeMyTrip) to e-stores (e.g. Croma).

However, all these platforms have the following distinct characteristics:

Modular and Evolving Technologies that provide omni-channel experience;
Data Analytics Engine that predicts consumption behavior based on Big Data;
Network Effects that propel them to gain momentum in the market

India is home to about 20 Tech Unicorns and is expected to reach more than 50 by 2024, of which 90 percent are digital platforms. These platforms especially in India assume lot of importance, especially due to their disintermediation roles (e.g. MagicBricks in real estate, Cars24 in used car market), inclusivity (e.g. P2P lending – Faircent), improving efficiency (e.g. Bounce for two wheeler rentals) and promoting innovation (e.g. Ninjacart) of the huge informal sector.

In this industry-led conference, we will be covering technology and business of digital platforms.

International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore

The International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT Bangalore or simply IIITB) is an Indian private research university in Bangalore, Karnataka. The university was founded in 1999 with a vision to contribute to the IT world by focusing on education and research, entrepreneurship and innovation. It offers Integrated M.Tech., M.Tech., M.S. (Research) and PhD programs in the field of Information Technology. In February 2005, IIIT-B was conferred Deemed University status under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act 1956. This was re-affirmed by the Tandon Committee report in October 2009, which gave (cf. Annexure VII (b) of the report) IIIT-B a score of 41 (the most given to any deemed university).

IIIT-Bangalore is promoted by the Government of Karnataka. IIITB is managed by a Governing Body with Kris Gopalakrishnan, executive co-chairman, Infosys Ltd., as the chairperson.IIIT Bangalore is also regarded as one of the best institute for IT in India
